AHMEDABAD: The Medical Council of India has gifted wannabe doctors of Gujarat with 290 more seats for post-graduate medical courses. Nationwide, the seat increase is 3,791.
The change is effective from the academic year 2010-11. This jump in seats is attributed to a new set of rules introduced by MCI recently where every professor can take care of two students. Earlier, one professor was limited to one student. This has effectively doubled the capacity.
Correspondingly, the number of PG seats has jumped to 18,000. The primary beneficiaries of this seat increase will be government-run medical colleges like BJ Medical College and NHL Municipal Medical College in Ahmedabad, Vadodara Medical College and government medical colleges in Surat, Rajkot, Bhavnagar and Jamnagar.
Nationwide, Andhra Pradesh has bagged the most seats with 611, followed by Maharashtra (476). Gujarat is at No.6 with 290 seats.
"Students hailing from poor economic backgrounds will benefit from this increase. Now, deserving students can get admission without having to worry about exorbitant capitation fees. The students will no longer need to contend with hefty fee structure of private colleges," said Ketan Desai, president of MCI.
